Lau Gek Huee and Lau Gek Teng
Rainbow Centre (Singapore)
Gek Huee and Gek Teng, aged 19 and 21 respectively, are sisters first and co-workers second. While the process of finding work that would engage them meaningfully was challenging, their hard work and perseverance, and the unwavering support from their mother and trainers from Rainbow Centre’s Micro Business Academy, led both sisters to try their hand at crafting various products.
You would not be able to tell just by looking at the sisters that they communicate non-verbally and require their full-time caregiver mother to help manage their daily routines. Looking at their craft, it is easy to overlook how far they have come on their journey towards their dreams.
Now the Gek sisters are known as the dynamic beading and packing duo. They are a small business owner with Social Gifting, a social enterprise platform partner, selling various crafts using hama beads.
Gek Huee and Gek Teng are special. They are autistic.
They have a dream. They love being entrepreneur and have a business of their own.
